Portugal is arguably the weakest of the top-seeded team in the Euro 2016. However, they would be quite happy to be in Group F along with Austria, Iceland, and Hungary since it is their chance to go to the final. Even so, they still have to be vigilant. Here is how their prospects, how they qualified, and who their key players are to tell you whether they can be advanced to the final of euro 2016.
Portugal Chance in Euro 2016
Euro 2016 prospects – Good opportunity
Portugal is the favorite team to win the group. Austria and Iceland have some great star players but they are still not good enough to balance Portugal’s level. As for Hungary, it will be their first time to qualify for Euro since 1972 so it is not to be seen as a significant threat to Portugal. Although they have been passed the group stage since 1996, Portugal has never become a champion. Therefore, having with opponents like Austria, Hungary, and Iceland, this is maybe the Portugal’s year to have a deeper trip.
How they qualified – Lack of star quality
Portugal filled with feelings of desperation to make up for their defeat when appearing in the World Cup held in Brazil. They also have an impressive record at the European Championship after made it to the knockout stages of every six times they have qualified. However, unlike in 2004 when they were just being runner-up with an aging golden generation after being defeated by Greece, the Portuguese national team players today seems somewhat lacking star quality. Of course, with one exception: Cristiano Ronaldo. If Portugal can achieve success in this tournament, they will rely on Ronaldo to make a big show.
Portugal started the pursuit in Group I with a surprise 0-1 defeat on Albania. It made Paulo Bento fired and Santos was appointed to replace him. Under Santos’ guidance, Portugal won six consecutive wins, including Denmark. This makes Portugal impressively into the last 16.
After ensuring their place in Euro 2016, the coach Fernando Santos rotated his squad. He came and brought back experienced players such as Atletico Madrid midfielder Tiago and Monaco central defender Ricardo Carvalho.
The players who played against Denmark were also rested against Serbia. This is done to change tactics so the coach released Cristiano Ronaldo, Tiago and Ricardo Carvalho from the squad. Without Ronaldo, Helder Postiga or Eder could be the Portugal’s spearhead to face his opponents.
This does not mean that they are not a talented team. The noticeable youngster players for international matches are a proof that they have a bright future.
But with the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo as the spearhead up front of course always been a focal point of the entire opposing players. This Real Madrid star was always able to break through every guard defenders, and finish the match with outstanding results. So, their position as the weakest of the top team is not a problem.
It will, of course, be Cristiano Ronaldo. Who else? A world-class player who has escorted his club to be a champion but he was unfortunately never brought a trophy for his country. In addition, of course, there will be Eder, Jose Fonte, and Cedric Soares.
